Published in the journal Science, the study demonstrates a way to upgrade the biochemical pathway that fixes carbon from the air and powers plant growth. The new pathway, called the McG Cycle, makes molecules usable in the same pathways as those created by the Calvin Cycle. In fact, the McG Cycle supplements the Calvin Cycle and plays well with it, and each pathway can even supplement the other by using excess chemical products. The McG pathway is significantly more efficient than the natural version. This experiment was done on what is essentially a weed species, but basic biochemistry has a good chance of being smoothly applied to other plant species.
