Significant news has rattled the SEC and the Heisman odds, as Sooner Scoop confirmed that Oklahoma starting quarterback John Mateer has suffered an injury to his thumb on his throwing hand and is set to undergo surgery. The school announced on Tuesday that Mateer is set to undergo surgery on Wednesday. On the season, Mateer has passed for 1,215 yards and six touchdowns to three interceptions, but has also accumulated 190 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. If Mateer does have to miss a month, as reported by ESPN's Jake Trotter, Mateer could return for the Sooners' matchup with Ole Miss on October 25.
