Omar Abdullah was no longer playing along.
There are voices within his own party who take a much stronger position against Delhi, but Omar has remained very measured in not annoying Delhi.
The remarks surprised many in the Valley, but observers note that Abdullah’s political instincts have long favoured centralism over confrontation.
“Omar realises that his space in Kashmir’s politics is shrinking and that what he really wanted was the promise of statehood,” said a political observer based in Kashmir.
