Almost a week later, the Defence Research and Development Organisation, India’s leading missile development agency, successfully tested its Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS). New Delhi’s focus on indigenous air defence systems stems from the recognition of the changing nature of war and its own recent experience of military skirmishes. A high-level, tri-services military committee deemed the missile defence system a desirable but unfeasible proposition. At this stage, however, it remains unclear whether the Sudarshan Chakra project’s expanded scope of covering vital civilian centres would involve the BMD shield as well. The first phase involved the testing of the Prithvi Air Defence and the Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile interceptors targeting the incoming projectiles at the endo-atmospheric level.
