The pitch about Bengali-speaking Muslims being infiltrators has always been there in the noisy chamber of Indian politics. In Assam, the BJP is in power, and in West Bengal, it is the principal opposition. The independent Indian state is seeking to partition the hearts and minds of its own citizens to consolidate a majoritarian nationalism. The irony is heartbreaking: a republic born in the midst of the trauma of Partition is seeking to repeat it. The first partition of Bengal in 1905 was undone in 1911, but it created a communal divide that a filmmaker still seeks to showcase on the eve of another State election in West Bengal.
