He won the Sahitya Akademi Award (in 1984) and the Commonwealth Poetry Prize (in 1987), and was awarded the Padma Shri in 2014. Daruwalla broke ground with his first book of poems, Under Orion, in which he took on violence, both natural and man-made. He once said: “It is unfashionable to say so, but I feel even in poetry content is more important than form. Keki N. Daruwalla was a major poet, and despite some excessive rhetoric, his work will remain a positive part of Indian poetry in English for years to come.
