Democracy’s blind spot

India’s National Fortnightly Magazine
Missing from the House: Muslim Women in the Lok Sabha (Juggernaut, 2025) by Rasheed Kidwai and Ambar Kumar Ghosh examines one of Indian politics’ most persistent blind spots.
The book reveals a stark reality that in 5 of the 18 Lok Sabha elections held since the country’s Independence, not even a single Muslim woman secured a seat, while the representation of Muslim women in the 543-member Lok Sabha never surpassed four at any given time.
Shockingly, no Muslim woman MP has ever been elected to the Lok Sabha from the southern States.
In this context, Missing from the House… zooms in further on the “doubly marginalised” Muslim women.
Without family ties, these 13 likely would not have entered the Lok Sabha.
