For more than half a century, Adel Tartir devoted his life to the theater and laid the founding pillars of the contemporary Palestinian theater movement. From Al-Saqifa Theater to Balaleen Troupe, and later the Sandouq El-Ajab Theater, Tartir believed wholeheartedly that genuine, committed theater—born of and belonging to the people—plays an enlightening, mobilizing, educational, and liberating role. Throughout his theatrical journey, Adel Tartir made several key contributions to Palestinian theater. He founded a dedicated, professional theatrical practice based on collective work which he sustained until his final breath. His library and culture amazed me: he movedfrom Kafka to Sa’dallah Wannous to Abdel Latif Aqel to Sharif Kana’neh, and beyond—from Maghrebi to Gulf theater, to Latin American, to European, to works on monodrama, street theater, Theater of the Oppressed, children’s theater, storytelling, and countless plays.
