A look back at the history of the Old Harbour
[]
Barry And District News | News
The scene we look out from today; on an early autumn day, is from the base of the former Austry Medieval storage building.
From an archaeological point of view immediately east of the Austry buildings, I, along with the eminent archaeologist Howard Thomas, many years ago found Roman tile and pottery, then Medieval pottery.
The location became known as the 'Old harbour of Barry' after the construction of the West Barry Dock dam in 1884.
Often would I lose a shoe wading the short cut passage across the muds to Barry Island from the Austry in the early 1980s.
Any finds that people have never reported and want me to write up from the Old Harbour, please email me at: karljlangford@hotmail.com.
