Deviating slightly, a narrow path through trees led into the ivy and foliage remains of Candleston Castle, a 14th century manor house relating to the Norman Cantelupe family. Reaching the outskirts of Newton, pavements and walkways led back to Church Street with its array of worked allotments hidden behind a stout stone wall and into the churchyard of St John the Baptist and the end of the walk. Jasper Tudor the uncle of Henry VII originally rebuilt the church and since then it has been restored many times. Its porch became a parish meeting place and also a schoolroom and the clock workings are around 250 years old, whilst its churchyard cross has a 14th century base.
