As Sönke Ahrens explains in How to Take Smart Notes, writing so-called Literature Notes will slow you down, but otherwise it will bring only benefits: you will get deeper into the topic, you will find it easier to recognize that you don’t understand the text, your existing knowledge will be more easily connected to the new knowledge (which is a prerequisite for being able to recall the knowledge later), and finally: you will have written a paraphrase of the text that you can use later elsewhere (with a reference to the source, of course).
