He has written two books: “Calvin Tibbets, Oregon’s First Pioneer,” was his first book, published in 2016. His newest and second book, “Bayocean: The Atlantis of Oregon,” is about a place that no longer exists, but once was situated on a sandy spit in Tillamook, Oregon. In his book, Sutherland emphasizes the importance of preserving historical awareness, even when the physical traces of that history are consumed by the land itself. Four years later I published “Calvin Tibbets: Oregon’s First Pioneer” in August 2016. The story is the start of Portland’s early history — Bayocean attracted tourists from the city and spurred economic and transportation development.
