It involves reducing, or switching off, street lighting in areas of Oxfordshire for part of the night, dubbed "part-night lighting". However, the city of Oxford would not be part of this scheme, meaning lights will stay on and the city council cannot apply to alter the street lights. Oxfordshire County Council operates 60,000 street lights overnight across the county, and switching them off would save £400,000 a year. "Some suggest that increased police presence or other safety measures should be considered if street lighting is reduced." Despite this, town and parish councillors who responded mostly believed their areas would not be interested in reduced or switched off street lights.
