The United States Food & Drug Administration is alerting the public about a food product that may be contaminated with a radioactive substance. The shrimp contains cesium-137, which is a man-made radioisotope of cesium. The shrimp was sold at Baker's, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Foodsco, Gerbes, King Soopers, Jay C, Kroger, Mariano's, Metro Market, Pay Less Supermarkets, Pick 'n Save, Ralphs, Smith's, and QFC stores. The FDA is investigating the reports of contamination in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products that were processed by BMS Foods of Indonesia. The FDA explains that the primary health effect of concern is that repeated low-dose exposure to radioactive food or drink can lead to an elevated risk of cancer caused by damage to a person's DNA.
