SARAH GREEN: So four seconds– just about the length of time it takes to take a deep breath, the idea here being that if we can just pause just for a moment before we react to something, that, we will move past our self-defeating behaviors and have better outcomes. But I talk about it a lot in general, which is emotional courage, which is our willingness to feel unpleasant feelings, and that in our willingness to feel unpleasant feelings, that’s where our power lies to choose different actions. It turns out, making someone feel better is not a particularly productive response to their feeling badly, because ultimately, they feel badly.
