Joan C. Williams, director of the Center for WorkLife Law at the University of California Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, discusses serious misconceptions that the U.S. managerial and professional elite in the United States have about the so-called working class. Many people conflate “working class” with “poor” — but the working class is, in fact, the elusive, purportedly disappearing middle class. JOAN WILLIAMS: There was a recent study that– it was a matched resumes study– that found that if you gave people resumes– one that of white men, one that had cues that this was person from a working class background, one that had cues from a professional background– that the professional guy’s resume, he would get 16 times more callbacks than the working class guy’s resume.
