For Lafayette Parish, the issue is just a lack of funds. Across the 500 miles of parish roads in unincorporated Lafayette that equals $15 million per year. But the only dedicated funding for parish roads is a parishwide millage that’s budgeted to bring in $11.2 million this year. Decade after decade, the city of Lafayette keeps taking on more debt to build more new road projects. So that maybe someday we won’t keep hitting potholes on the drive to the ribbon cutting for new road projects.
