It all started with the observation that as the more junior ranks of an organization became more diverse, there were more women, more people from different racial and ethnic backgrounds, those people were less likely to get mentoring, and they were less likely to get sponsored into promotions, in big stretch assignments that would help position them for the future. Now the reason why I talk about authentic sponsorship is because, again, organizations seeing that certain kinds of people are less likely to naturally get sponsored into mission critical roles and into big stretch assignments started assigning people to sponsors.
