The judge has barred prosecutors from telling the jury that Barna Haynes pleaded guilty and was sent to prison. Wednesday morning FBI Special Agent Doug Herman, who led the public corruption investigation, also revealed that Haynes somehow got wind of the federal investigation months before the May 2022 raid of the district attorney’s office, now headed by DA Don Landry. Lawyers and former prosecutors told The Current in early 2023 that Landry invited federal scrutiny by rehiring Haynes after his predecessor, Keith Stutes, had pushed Haynes out. In his opening statement Monday, Haynes’ defense attorney, Todd Clemons of Lake Charles, told jurors Haynes did not accept kickbacks. There were matters of the office Landry did clearly recall.
