A recent study has estimated that 16,500 deaths in European cities this summer were caused by climate change. They found that human-induced global warming was responsible for approximately 68% of the 24,400 heat-related deaths during the summer months of June through August 2025. Temperatures were found to be up to 3.6°C higher than they would have been without climate change. Notably, Rome, Athens, and Paris experienced the highest numbers of heat-related fatalities, with estimated deaths of 835, 630, and 409, respectively. Experts caution that these numbers may underestimate the true impact, as heat-related deaths are often underreported.
