Bath Fire Station was finished in 1937 in an Art Deco style and is one of the only known fire stations designed by a female architect, Molly Gerrard. Meanwhile Shoreditch Fire Station was completed in 1965 to a Brutalist design drawn up by London County Council. Historic England said Bath Fire Station was ‘accomplished and well-realised design’ with a ‘compact and well-articulated plan form’ as well as a high degree of surviving fabric and original fixtures and fittings. Oli Marshall, campaigns director at the Twentieth Century Society, which advocated the listing of both fire stations, argued that the fire stations could be adapted for modern-day use. ‘The criteria for listing are set out in the secretary of state’s principles of selection for listed buildings.’
