A new chapter in global sustainability research has begun. Scientists and practitioners from around the world have come together to launch the Society for Social-Ecological Systems (SocSES) — the first international society dedicated to the science and practice of social-ecological systems. Social-ecological systems research explores the deep and often complex connections between human societies and the natural environments they depend on. The launch of SocSES marks a major milestone in building a global, supportive, and inclusive community of researchers and practitioners. In addition to traditional research, SocSES aims to encourage innovative knowledge-sharing spaces, environmentally responsible networking practices, and an open culture of learning.
