Today a Government department called the Child Maintenance Service takes errant fathers to task – working out, collecting and paying out maintenance for the support of children. The Poor Law Act 1576 set out for the first time the legal responsibility of parents for the maintenance of a child. The Act remained in force until 1834, after a system of elected Poor Law Guardians was introduced. The child was named Hannah and baptised at Kildwick Church on March 11 and remarkably for the age, the father, George, attended the baptism. The event was recorded in the registers – "Hannah Hudson alias Bottomley daughter of Elizabeth Hudson spinster and Geo.
