Octogenarian Ugandan leader Yoweri Museveni was formally confirmed as a candidate for reelection to the presidency by Uganda’s electoral commission. Museveni has ruled the country since 1986, and this election will be the second in a row in which he is challenged by pop-star-turned-politician Bobi Wine. The political opposition led by Wine faces a brutal pre-election crackdown, with its supporters frequently beaten and thrown in jail, Sophie Neiman reported from Kampala earlier this month. While Museveni’s reelection next year is all but certain, “What remains unclear is how far he will go to ensure his continued rule,” Neiman wrote.
