One element that will help preserve democracy and the internet is to delegate the navigation of the overwhelming modern information ecosystem to intermediaries that are empowered both technically and legally to act on behalf of an individual, and that are held in check through both market and regulatory forces. This proposed structure is both a metaphor for representative democracy, in that individuals can choose among options for agent representatives to carry their preferences forward collectively, and at the same time a tool to improve real-world representative democracy, by improving the long-term outlook for applying social wisdom to manage misinformation and mitigate what the RAND Corporation calls “truth decay.” Unlocking more agency in managing the filtering and recommendation…
