Artificial General Intelligence: What Are We Investing In?
['Audrey Mocle']
Tech Policy Press
The concept of AGI, an AI system capable of rivaling human thinking, is a marketing tool and investment pitch for generative AI companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI. This large deployment of venture capital and capital expenditures has been premised on two assumptions: first, generative AI products will be profitable, and second, building more AI infrastructure will produce better generative AI products — and eventually — AGI. Investors, particularly those with stakes in the big tech hyperscalers and limited partnerships in venture funds exposed to generative AI, should be critical of overselling the benefits of this new technology — financial or otherwise.
