3,000 and rising - alarm as farm closures accelerate
['Debbie James']
South Wales Guardian | News
The data, obtained by the Welsh Liberal Democrats, show that in total there were 2,835 closures, and the speed of those closures has dramatically accelerated.
Politicians and farming unions are laying blame in part on the UK government’s proposed changes to inheritance tax, what has become commonly known as the ‘family farm tax’, and due to come into force from April 2026.
They are family businesses that keep rural Wales alive.
Earlier this month, a Pembrokeshire farming family highlighted the ripple effect the inheritance tax changes could have on rural businesses.
Janet Cornock said her family’s mixed dairy farming businesses was “in jeopardy’’ if the government did not row back on its plans.
