There are moments in The Deep End, the excellent four-part documentary series directed by Jon Kasbe and produced by Bits Sola and The Documentary Group and currently available on Hulu, when Teal Swan, a Park City, Utah-based spiritual guru, displays characteristics that one might admire in a maverick CEO who comprehends the power of disruptive innovation. Before taking on The Deep End documentary project, Kasbe had not heard of Swan but Tom Yellin and Gabrielle Tenenbaum of The Documentary Group sent him various materials and podcast interviews about Swan, her critics and her practices. Indeed, given how Kasbe thoroughly and clearly explained the documentary process, watching Swan’s reactions to the series is surprising on one hand but not so much on another.
