In the 1960s, the Department of Justice, led by John Doar, meticulously documented how local county registrars abused state voting laws to disenfranchise Black citizens. Today, the problem is not local registrars but rather a coordinated effort by certain state legislators, federal representatives and judges in North Carolina and across the nation to suppress votes when they don’t like the outcome of an election. Yet the extremists are back in full force, attacking basic rights, denying people’s votes and challenging results whenever they don’t like the outcome.
