Made up of 24 knights and ‘lady companions’, in the past appointments were strictly for those in the aristocracy. Befitting their status, Prince William, Queen Camilla, King Charles, the Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Anne all wore the Order of the Garter sash, star and badge to attend the state banquet at Windsor Castle. The Royal Order may have been founded by James III (1488-1513). He was responsible for changes in Royal symbolism in Scotland, including the adoption of the thistle as the royal plant badge. King Charles is the Sovereign of the Order, and appointments to the Order of the Thistle are entirely in his personal gift.
