The U.S. Department of Education has abruptly terminated nearly $11 million for two grant programs that have been helping Wisconsin serve children with vision and hearing loss and others receiving special education services, according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Wisconsin is one of several states to be affected by the cuts to Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Part D grants. Wisconsin Superintendent Jill Underly called on the Trump administration to reconsider the decision in a statement this week. In its first year, the state program helped 280 new special education teachers. According to DPI data, only 46% of new special education teachers in Wisconsin remain in the field after seven years.
