The two farmers are among a growing group of small business owners on the cutting edge of marine innovation along rural and remote parts of Maine’s coast. At Maine Ocean Farms, Leathers and his crew can load up to 3,500 pounds of oysters and ice in containers onto their electric boat, Heron. He takes it to do construction work on sea farms within a 15 mile radius of where he docks it on the Cousins River. Once they’re in the water, charging is difficult because Maine’s sea farms are spread across a vast and mostly rural area that is largely unequipped with the charging infrastructure this transition will require. At the front edge of innovation, it’s this kind of creativity that makes Morris excited about the future of electric boat adoption in the region.
