Martin Luther King Jr. joined this campaign for jobs, education, health care, housing, and income for all Americans, and before he was assassinated, he planned a new march on Washington, the Poor People’s Campaign of 1968, to demand economic rights for all, linking the civil rights movement directly to a movement for economic rights. His American Health Security Act would provide every American with affordable and comprehensive health-care services through the establishment of a national American Health Security Program. Like the job guarantee, public banking would generate a floor in the financial sector—if private banks don’t provide services at least as good as those provided by the public option, we expect consumers to close their accounts at private banks and choose the public banks.
