Sanders, the current front-runner for the Democratic nomination for president, was participating in a forum on poverty Wednesday at the church in Goldsboro, an African American majority city in the sprawling eastern region of the state that has both a higher concentration of black and poor residents. Deondra Rose, the director of research at Duke University's Center for Political Leadership, Innovation and Service, says Sanders' comments in Goldsboro illustrate how he has tailored his message in an effort to reach African American voters and other voters of color.
