Furthermore, in rural areas in states like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, unqualified healthcare providers — what we call “informal sector providers” — provide care for over 75 per cent of primary care visits. Sadly, these are not representative of the typical doctors or healthcare settings that most people in India can access, because two-thirds of India lives in rural areas. The three pronged approach that I would recommend is as follows: First, prepare healthcare providers for what is coming; second, educate patients about what coronavirus is and how to deal with it; and third, make strategic investments in creative surveillance systems that can help get ahead of the epidemic.
