Non-Black Americans are finally reckoning with a truth Black Americans have long known: Black lives lives are undervalued. In our new book, From Here to Equality: Reparations for Black Americans in the Twenty-First Century, we put numbers to the message embodied in the slogan “Black Lives Matter” and make a clear, concise case for reparations. We support the formation of such a commission, but also want to ensure that three conditions are met: 1) Set an 18-month deadline for the completion of an initial report; 2) designate in the report Black American descendants of persons enslaved in the United States as the eligible recipients; 3) specify that the report produce proposed legislation that will eliminate the racial wealth gap.
