Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Rollout of the COVID-19 vaccines in the United States has gone slower than expected but should ramp up by the end of January, former U.S. Food and Drug Administration director Dr. Mark McClellan said Wednesday. With fewer than 5 million people in the United States having received the shot as of this week -- well below the stated goal of 20 million by the end of 2020 -- federal and state governments will likely need to enhance outreach efforts and "expand partnerships with the private sector" to make that happen, he said. These programs could be expanded to include customers of these pharmacies living outside such facilities, given that they already have the infrastructure in place to deliver the flu vaccine, including computerized appointment systems, McClellan said.
