Such astonishingly high infection rates also mean that the inferred mortality rates due to the virus are very small, less than 0.1 per cent, and similar low rates are also seen in our neighbouring countries. Regardless of the truth behind India’s unique tryst with COVID-19, it appears that we are about to vaccinate hundreds of millions of people to protect them from a virus which has already infected more than half of our population.
