On one Saturday morning, Siembra NC and six other groups set up mock polling stations around the county, including downtown Graham, for a “People’s Referendum” on removing the monument and terminating the sheriff’s authority to enforce federal immigration law. The following Monday, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, ACLU of North Carolina, and NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund filed two federal lawsuits against the Graham Police Department and Alamance County Sheriff’s Office. “Something like Alamance County that refuses to move out of the fifties—if you can change Alamance County, you can change any county.”
