Philip Napoli, professor at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy and author of Social Media and the Public Interest: Media Regulation in the Disinformation Age, also says we should treat social media platforms as information fiduciaries. Social media companies aren’t going to invest the time or money in making their platforms safer because it isn’t in their best interest. The FCC fined Facebook $5 billion because the company misrepresented its handling of people’s data, not because there are any specific regulations that apply to social media platforms.
