As students returned to New York classrooms this week, authorities raced to finalize state measures that will ban internet companies from exploiting kids' personal data and using "addictive" algorithms designed to keep kids hooked on social media. But the fight against mental health harms caused by cellphone, social media and technology companies was just beginning, experts asserted. And with the generational rise of social media and smartphones unfolding over the past two decades, Duke University professor Philip Napoli said, "It’s amazing in some ways that it took this long" for state and federal lawmakers to pursue measures to protect data privacy and youth mental health.
