(WFRV) – As Wisconsin’s deer hunting season begins, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding hunting to help track Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) by testing their harvested deer. According to the DNR, testing is available statewide and is especially needed in areas where the disease has recently been detected. Infected deer may show symptoms like weight loss, drooping ears, poor coordination, and reduced fear of humans, though many appear healthy for months. If a deer tests positive, hunters will receive a replacement harvest authorization valid for the rest of the season and next year’s. While no cases have been reported in humans, testing is recommended, especially in areas where CWD is common.
