Four minutes later, Mayenda equalised and five minutes into stoppage time, Brighton-bound Watson, a 73rd minute substitute who had a hand in the equaliser, pounced on Kieffer Moore’s loose ball, charged towards the box and calmly and clinically found the bottom corner. It was O’Nien who was screaming out the final instructions to his Sunderland teammates in the pre-match huddle and even when he was being nursed around the perimeter of the pitch, he raised his uninjured arm and managed to squeeze even more volume out of the Sunderland supporters. Sunderland needed a spell and they at least managed to take the sting out of the game, but it wasn’t until the 17th minute that they attacked with any purpose, winning a corner that was taken by Enzo Le Fee but this time not met by Dan Ballard.
