New York, January 27, 2020 – Counterterrorism efforts are harming children living in countries embroiled in armed conflict, Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict said in a report released today. The 26-page report, Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism: The Erosion of Children’s Rights in Armed Conflict, examines how counterterrorism efforts are impacting the rights of children in conflict-affected countries, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen. “In armed conflicts featuring terrorist elements, children are being doubly victimized: first by the armed groups that recruit and abuse them, and then by governments that treat them as threats,” said Adrianne Lapar, program director for Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict.
