Today’s guest is James Grimmelmann, a legal scholar with a computer science background who-- along with Charles Duan-- recently conducted a review of various moderation technologies to determine how they might hold up in under US federal communication privacy regimes including the Wiretap Act, the Stored Communications Act, and the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA). But I do want to start perhaps with that last point you just made, which is this idea that these technologies, encrypted messaging apps, are a different generation of communications technology that the law didn't anticipate.
