In order to reach that end goal to build the AGI, they had to let those humanitarian goals fade into the background because the companies that they ended up working with, who they needed to work with to get the funding to build AGI, they are optimizing for profit and growth, not for societal benefit in the way that Sam and Demis had started off wanting to do. When I was talking to people for the book, people who had worked at DeepMind and people who had worked for OpenAI, there's almost this cult-like reverence for the idea of building AGI.
