The lava field itself was fed by a lava tube, a tunnel from an underground river of lava kilometers upslope fed by a small lava pond at Puu Oo that fed the flow field downhill where we were hiking. Active tube fed pahoehoe flows like these that has been going for almost 30 years at that time is a rather unspectacular form compared to Leilani or Holuhraun, most of the lava flow is covered by a thin silvery reflective crust and active flowing lava river canals or fountains are non–existent in this type of activity. In HVNP we do not poke the lava, we do not steal lava, we do not pee in the lava and we do not incinerate our trash in the lava flows, it is a watch-and-see thing and leave nothing behind.
