Scientists led by EDF’s Ilissa Ocko published research this spring showing that a rapid, full-scale reduction of methane emissions from oil and gas, agriculture and other activities could slow the pace of worldwide warming by as much as 30%. The International Energy Agency estimates it’s possible to cut methane emissions from the global oil and gas sector 75% by 2030. But here’s the thing: Oil, gas and coal accounts for about a third of human-made methane, which means the 75% sectoral reduction identified by the IEA pencils out to a 25% cut in the total — which would put us well on the way to the 30% envisioned in the U.S./EU pledge.
