Despite the looming threat of online retail and internet price comparisons to the duty-free industry, new research by m1ndset has found that although 90% of European travellers have a Smartphone with them when travelling (and 95% of business travellers) and 86% use the internet at the airport, less than 10% do so to search for information on the shopping opportunities, such as comparing prices with other retail channels.
The survey of more than European travellers, which was commissioned by the European Travel Retail Confederation (ETRC) and presented at its recent annual Forum in Brussels, looked at the opportunities for growth through a better understanding of travellers’ behaviour with technology as well as their use of social media while travelling and revealed some important and actionable insights.
The survey found that only one in ten travellers interviewed did not possess a social media profile, with 79% of travellers who have a social media profile declaring they were on Facebook and 76% on LinkedIn.
M1ndset found that most travellers use the internet both as a source of information for their travel planning (97%) and for their travel booking, particularly for private trips (91%).
Clearly, we are not yet reaching our customers where they are spending a significant amount of time – online and on social media.
