Meip "Maria" Haayen passed at age 96 on the morning of April 17, 2023. Maria's wishes were to be cremated and for her "lieve hartjes" to honour her in the way they see fit. She was a loving wife to family physician Dr. Petrus "Peter" Haayen, and is survived by her children: Peter (Colleen) Haayen, Marieke (Errol) Guthrie, and her grandchildren: Hainsley (Joy) Guthrie, Simone Guthrie, Lyndsey Haayen, Lisa (Konrad) Haayen-Kellman and her great grandchildren. Maria was a woman who was passionate about human rights, and could see the beauty and magic in people and cultures across the world. She made a home that reflected her love of the arts and her love of her family. Maria was a light in the world, and she will be dearly missed. An ode to Oma, who many held so dear,Her empathy shone, without a hint of fear,Born in war, yet her heart pure and bright,Her caring soul, a beacon of light.Through Netherlands' liberation, she went,With courage, food she gently lent,Her selflessness, a hero's grace,Providing sustenance, in a hungry place.Beyond wartime, her wisdom shone,Reminding us how we've grown,To cherish blessings, big and small,Her voice, a guiding angel's call. Her spirit infectious, her smile bright,Leaving a mark of pure delight,On all she met along the way,Her kindness and love, a lasting stay. Now as we bid farewell, with tears we cry,Her favourite song, a poignant lullaby,"Con te partirò," softly sings,It's time to say goodbye, on angel wings. Her legacy lives on, in hearts and veins,Her spirit shining, despite life's strains,Rest in peace, dear Oma, so dear,Your love in our hearts, forever clearBy: Hainsley Guthrie
